A letter to the editor by IGES President and Alliance for Earth Observations Executive Director Nancy Colleton was published on the September 8, 2012 issue of Physics Today.

The letter was written in support of an earlier article by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Administrator Jane Lubchenco and National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) Director Thomas Karl on the importance of weather monitoring and environmental intelligence for the nation.

“With shrinking budgets threatening our ability to meet growing demand for environmental information, the Alliance for Earth Observations has focused its efforts on advocating for the development of a national strategy for environmental intelligence,” says Colleton in the letter.

This issue was the focus of the Forum on Earth Observations V: Creating a National Strategy for Environmental Intelligence, which brought together leaders from the U.S. Earth observations community to assess the way forward in ensuring the capture and delivery of this critical information.
