The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) is proud to announce that Senior Earth Scientist, Dr. Rusty Low, has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Brazil for citizen science.

Dr. Low will be collaborating with other scientists at the Brazilian Space Agency and the Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba, as part of a project to develop capabilities of mobile app-based citizen science in Brazil to support education, conservation, sustainability, and climate resilience.

“I am delighted and honored to contribute to strengthening citizen science in Brazil and to work with so many long-time and esteemed colleagues,” states Low. “Being a Fulbright Scholar has always been a dream. I am truly honored.”

As a Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Low will share knowledge and foster meaningful connections across communities in the United States and Brazil. Fulbrighters engage in cutting-edge research and expand their professional networks, often continuing research collaborations started abroad and laying the groundwork for forging future partnerships between institutions. Upon returning to their institutions, labs, and classrooms, in the United States, they share their stories and often become active supporters of international exchange, inviting foreign scholars to campus and encouraging colleagues and students to go abroad. As Fulbright Scholar alumni, their careers are enriched by joining a network of thousands of esteemed scholars, many of whom are leaders in their fields. Fulbright alumni include 60 Nobel Prize laureates, 88 Pulitzer Prize recipients, and 39 who have served as a head of state or government.

“Anyone who knows Rusty, immediately recognizes her passion for science and teaching. This incredible recognition is so well deserved especially given her work in citizen science and mosquito habitats. Speaking for her IGES colleagues and many across the broad Earth science community, we can’t wait to see her positive contributions as a Fulbright Scholar,” says Nancy Colleton, IGES president.
